Ethical Spending (eg. Organic Food) is at an all Time High!!
And has beaten Beer & Cigarette Sales!!
29.11.06
According to a report published a few days ago, for the very
first time, the amount we spend on ethical products like organic
food and fairtrade goods, amounts to more than we spend on alcohol
and cigarettes!
The report in question is the Co-op's annual Ethical Consumerism
Report, and this reveals that the value of ethical consumerism
hit an all time high of £29.3 billion in 2005. This is
compared to the £28 billion spent on beer and cigarettes.
This evidence was gathered from ethical goods and services such
as organic food, transport, energy, holidays and financial products.
The evaluation found that the total spend for these ethical goods
in 2005 rose by 11%, compared with the previous year.
That increase outstrips the 1.4% increase in overall UK household
expenditure. Organic products, Fairtrade goods, free-range eggs
and other "ethical" food products saw an 18% year-on-year
boost to £5.4 billion, while energy-efficient electrical
goods, wind-turbines and other green energy products rose to
£4.1 billion, compared to £3.8 billion the previous
year.
The spending on eco-friendly transport such as public transport,
green cars and responsible tour operators, rose from £1.7
billion in 2004 to £1.8 billion in 2005.
Ethical banking and investments saw a rise of £11.6
billion from £10.6 billion.
The increase on spending for ethical personal products, such
as organic skin care, rose by 5% to £1.3 billion. Craig
Simon the Co-op's executive director said, "The fact that
the value of ethical consumerism is now higher than the retail
figures for cigarettes and beer is a milestone."
However, ethical spending has only become the 'norm' in a
minority of markets. The overall spend on ethical food still
only accounts for 5% of the typical shopping basket.
Retail workers in Glasgow, at Peckham's - the Scottish company
which prides itself in stocking many Fairtrade items, staff have
said that some customers do not come in specifically for ethical
produce.
Patrick Hannity, 22,of Peckham's food hall in Glasgow said:
"We sell things such as coffee, teas, beers and chocolate
which are all Fairtrade, and they are popular, because they are
all good quality. "I am pretty surprised at the figures.
With the kind of clientele we have, I think they would be more
aware of ethical consumerism."
The report carried out by the Co-op took its finding from
its own ethical spending figures, and a
variety of other trade bodies.
