Fruit & Vegetable Box Schemes
There are many different organic box schemes opening up
all over the UK - the organic craze is sweeping the nation
as we speak.
If you are wanting to buy more local organic produce the
organic box scheme is definitely the option for you. You
can choose what fruit and vegetables you want, how often
you receive the box, it is delivered to your doorstep -
so no need to even leave the house, and you know where your
fresh produce is coming from.
Many organic box schemes also deliver other organic items
such as meat, dairy produce and other groceries. It all
depends on the company you use. In my area there are a couple
of organic box schemes that delivery a wide variety of produce.
They are very cost effective and the organic food is much
more tasty than the supermarket equivalent!
Organic food sold in supermarkets is normally not local
or even from the UK. The produce you are buying is also
not very good quality, compared with what a local organic
box scheme has to offer. From my personal experience I can
definitely tell the difference between local organic food
and supermarket organic food. The fruit and vegetables are
so tasty - I will never go back.
I pay £10 every week for a medium sized fruit and
veg box, which normally contains potatoes, carrots, some
kind of cabbage or fennel (what ever is in season etc),
onions, sometimes I get either mushrooms or brussel sprouts,
apples, oranges or satsumas, bananas, plums or pears, and
sometimes grapefruit or pomegranate. This box is ample fruit
and veg for two people for one week, it is sometime too
much! You can even specify which fruit and veg you want
and which you don't want - to create your own customised
organic box.
I urge you to find out about your local organic box schemes
and give it a go, I promise you wont be disappointed. If
you look in the directory on the website and click on your
county, it will give you a list of some of the organic suppliers
in your area. If you cant find what you are looking for,
it might be an idea to get in touch with a local organic
shop/supplier and ask if they know of any box schemes in
your area.
Reasons why you should opt for a local organic box scheme:
- Saves you a trip to the supermarket or local fruit and
vegetable shops.
- The local organic produce tastes so much better than
the supermarket equivalent.
- You get much better value for money.
- You are helping the farmers in your area.
- Not as many food miles on your produce.
- Fresh, local produce - you really cant beet it!
