Cottage Farm - Jacobstow, Cornwall
We
have started farming just 2 years ago, having
had no previous experience. Since then we have
built up a herd of 38 Red Ruby cows and also
a herd of Suffolk and Wiltshire Horn sheep.
Following the latest birth, we now have 90 head
of cattle and we aim to slaughter one bullock
and several lambs month.
In view of the end of growth and
the start of a long decline due to the coming
Climate Catastrophe and Peak Oil depression,
not to mention the financial meltdown, our emphasis
is on sustainability and self-sufficiency.
To this end we have decided to
undergo an organic conversion to free ourselves
from the treadmill of nature control through
the constant use of fertilisers, pesticides,
herbicides, and GM based fodder. In addition
we are undertaking various environmental and
self-sufficiency projects, such as: private
water source, off-grid electricity provision,
conversion of vehicles to vegetable oil which
we intend to grow and press ourselves and heating
based on wood from our farm, mainly from coppiced
hedges. And of course we aim to grow most of
our vegetables, keep chickens, ducks and geese
for eggs and meat, keep bees and enjoy their
honey and fatten up couple of pigs.
Here is a bit about our farm and
the fresh meat boxes we produce and deliver
both locally and nationwide:
Cottage Farm is a traditionally
run, sustainable farm of 60 acres in organic
conversion near Jacobstow in North Cornwall.
Our animals spend all their lives on our farm
grazing peacefully on the lush green permanent
pastures of our fields. No fertilizers, pesticides
or herbicides are applied. Further more, our
animals are fed almost exclusively on grass:
no supplements and no GM feeds. So there is
absolutely no possibility of any harmful residues
ending up on your plate if you order meat from
us.
Most beef available in shops is from Continental
breeds which grow fast and big. To support this
rate of growth they need to be fed vast quantities
of supplementary fodder, mostly GM based as
those are the cheapest.
In
contrast we have chosen a local, traditional
breed, the Red Ruby cattle, which are well suited
to the conditions in Cornwall, do well simply
on grass and do not need any supplementary feed.
As a result, our meat is beautifully marbled,
tender and delicious as well as having an excellent
flavor. It is also very pleasing to think what
a happy and peaceful lives the animal have lead
all their lives: no stress, just open fields
of green grass, their idea of heaven!
As Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall says in his River
Cottage Meat book: "The Red Ruby cattle
have an excellent, mild temperament and are
extremely well adapted to unfertilized grazing.
Bred to withstand harsh winters, they grow more
slowly and have natural ability to put on fat
reserves. It is this natural growth pace and
natural diet that makes the close-grained, well-marbled
meat British beef at its best. They simply produce
the best beef I have ever tasted."
Enough said. Try one of our fresh
meat boxes and I assure you you will not be
disappointed. Just look at our excellent feedback!
And here is something about the
meat boxes:
- Traditionally reared Lamb and Beef delivered
fresh to your door.
- Cottage Farm is a small, family-run farm
in organic conversion, managed in a very traditional
way.
- We use no artificial fertilizers or pesticides
so our grass fed Devon Red Ruby cattle and
Suffolk lambs mature slowly and naturally,
grazing peacefully on the green pasture of
North Cornwall.
- We do not use any GM foods
- We do not use routine antibiotics
- We do not use any growth promoters
This
is where you will notice the difference between
our meat and meat you might buy from a supermarket.
We of course do not inject water in the meat
as is common practice with supermarkets. On
the contrary, hanging the meat for up to 3 weeks
reduces the weight, but the flavor and tenderness
is greatly improved.

When our animals reach the optimum
weight, to reduce stress we send them to a small
local abattoir within 4 miles of the farm. After
hanging, to improve tenderness and flavor, the
meat is cut and prepared by a master butcher.
Each cut is packed separately and clearly labeled.
We aim to slaughter one bullock and as many
lambs as are ordered each month. Delivery is
normally in the last week of a given month.
All
the meat is delivered direct to your door by
courier. It is ideal for freezing. To give you
some idea of the amount of space needed, a 20
kg box of fresh meat will take up about 2 trays
in a standard upright freezer and a 10 kg box
will fit in one standard tray.
We have been complimented many
times on the tenderness and flavor of our meat.
I am sure you that you, too, will appreciate
and enjoy the wholesome products from our farm.
From field to fork, fresh, healthy, local and
natural meat at below supermarket prices!

Examples of recent feedback on
our meat boxes from our valued customers:
We had the first roast (topside) last night,
and indeed, we haven't tasted anything like
it since we stopped having our own in 1991.
It was truly gorgeous, rich and melted in the
mouth. The spaghetti Bolognese that we made
earlier using some mince was so good! I've just
done some pasties as well - something I haven't
made in over 40 years! They're super.
