Save The Bacon - The Farmer's Market Delivering Organic food
To Your Door
Save The Bacon specialise in supplying regional organic
foods to the general public in the UK. Their meat comes from
small organic farms where it is produced with care and kindness.
Below is an article giving you their background and ethics.
Background
Having farmed intensive cereals with chemicals in the 1960,s,
and 70,s it became clear that there were a few problems afoot.
Weeds became resistant to herbicides, insects to insecticides
and the antibiotics being fed to pigs and poultry were not working
and passing on bacterial resistance to humans - this did not
seem good! On top of all this the organic food we produced was
as likely to end up in a grain mountain and eventually dumped
in some country at the other side of the world to the detriment
of its native farmers. Not only that but it was clear that the
great British public wanted to know where their organic food
came from and how it was produced.
We started to farm organically in the early 1980's and all
went well, the public poured in to the farm where they could
pick their own eggs, see animals, touch the pigs, shop at the
farm shop etc. Then came the recession - no money + no organic
conversion subsidy = hard times. We stopped farming and moved
to a nearby village 12 years ago. With a wealth of experience
in growing, processing, retail, cooking and most importantly
eating good wholesome organic food behind us, we thought it would
be a good idea to do something really new. It was then that we
learned to switch on a computer.
Carol had seen an advert in the paper that said that there
was to be a computer course that did the basics, ie. Word, E
Mail, WWW, Excel etc. It was to cost £35 and held in Hackleton
Baptist Chapel back room one day a week for a year. We went and
learnt how very annoying these pieces of electrolysed plastic
could be.
Never mind, help was at hand. A young man who knew all about
these infernal machines sent to drive us mad, who designed a
website for us. It is said that a kind word and a few pints in
the countryside goes a long way. This was the start of our first
Save The Bacon website. Similarly an expert on Access created
a database for us which combined with the website.
That's it really, and Save the Bacon has grown steadily over
the years.
