At Christmas time we all love eating many differnt kinds of
food, and if you are concerned with the health effects of food
additives, genetically modified ingredients and pesticides and
also animal welfare, eating organic food this year is the best
safe option.
I have put together a list of different places to buy your
festive organic food from accross the country - this will enable
you to buy your organic food from local producers or online.
You can get many different products delivered nationwide to your
door via online shopping. This will save you the hastle of going
to the super busy supermarkets! There are even organic christmas
trees and organic gift ideas for you and your friends and family.

Organic Meat
The main kinds of foods eaten at Christmas time are meats,
like turkey, chicken, pork, ham, pork sausages and gammon. But
why you ask should we eat organic meat? There are many meat eaters
out there that dont like the way that animals are treated in
our modern farms. These animal waelfare issues are as important
to some meat eaters as taste. The standards that have to adhered
to for organic meat are not just about the use of antibiotics
and other chemicals etc, they are also about how the animals
are kept, treated, fed and much more. High levels of animal welfare
have to be adhered to.
These standards include rules like, all animals have to have
access to the outdoors, with lower stocking densities and a more
natural diet. Because of this they have naturally stronger immune
systems and so do not need to be treated with veterinary medicines
like antibiotics. The routine use of antibiotics is not allowed
under Soil Association standards.
Turkey
Organic Turkeys are also free-range, this means that the quality
of the meat will be much higher then conventially farmed turkeys.
Because organic turkeys spend their time running about outside
they dont have as much fat on them. Also the breed of turkey
makes a difference, some turkeys ahve more fat than others -
just like humans! The breeds Norfolk Black and Norfolk Bronze
produce a leaner carcass than the common white turkey.
Bacon & Ham
There are additives used in non-organic pork products, including
hydrolysed proteins, polyphosphates and sulphur dioxide, these
additives are not allowed in organic products. There are only
a very limited number of additives allowed in organic farming.
The most common ones include potassium nitrate, sodium nitrite
and salt - this is because of the risk of botulism
Sausages & Chipolatas
With organic sausages and chipolatas natural sausage skin
casings must be used and, as with bacon and ham, any additives
can only be used for limited and specific conditions. Intensive
farming methods include tail docking and teeth clipping - these
practices are banned in organic farming.

An Alternative Suggestion - Vegetarian
Food
It is not just that organic food doent contain all those nasty
chemicals etc, because there are many other things that make
organic food different. Research has shown that organic vegetables
contain higher levels of vitimin C and mineral levels and plant
compounds that can be effective in the fight against cancer.
In a recent survey from the Soil Association 65% of people said
they wanted to avoid food grown with pesticides. There is an
easy answer to this and it is to eat organic fruit and vegetables.
The Soil Association organic standards only allow 4 chamicals
to be used, and in practice only a fraction of farmers actually
use them. Also there is less water in organic vegetables, so
you get more for your money.
Organic food like ready meals dont contain food additives,
which can have adverse effects on health. For example they can
cause osteoporosis, heart disease, hyperactivity and migraines.
There are many chamicals banned byu the Soil Association and
amongst them are aspartame (artificial sweetener), hydrogenated
fat, and monosodium glutamate.

Oragnic Wine
With wine you need to make sure that it is not just about
the grapes. Because, there are many wines out there made from
organic grapes, but the key aspect you should look out for is
the amount of added sulphur. This is a key difference between
organic and non-organic wine. The sulphur is added during the
vinification to prevent the wine turning to vinegar. Under organic
rules the amount of sulphur that can be used is limited. Organic
producers on average use just one quarter of the legal maximum
for conventional wines, this may even lessen the chances of a
hangover!
Oragnic Beer
Organic beer is made from organic malt and hops using organic
growing methods. Conventional farmers on average are estimated
to spray hops up to 14 times each year with an average of 15
pesticide products.
Oragnic Spirits
They are not as widly available as organic wine, but organic
spirits are available through specialist-suppliers and some supermarkets.
The main difference between organic and non-organic spirits lies
in the use of organic raw materials. Take vodka for example,
conventional vodka is made from grain produced in systems usually
reliant upon multiple applications of pesticides and artificial
fertilisers.
